I am working with AdSense for years but at first I didn't give it much attention, my main income was from selling web design components like flash menus, php scripts, and similar things, but now I also earn from AdSense. I tried to teach some friends but it didn't work out well, I think you need more patience that you would estimate :), as others said, it it not a get rich quick game and I would say you need at least a year to see some significant income.
If you are a beginner that doesn't know much about creating websites or customizing html code, then I would recommend that you start with www.Blogger.com , by default you have a long address formated as: http://_your_picked_name.blogspot.com but you can pay $10/year and get a domain you like, then associate this domain with your blog, so your address is nicer, like: www._blog_name_.com I can help you with this, maybe is best to pick a domain after you already made some posts, just to make sure that you are comfortable with writing posts :)
Blogger blogs will automatically integrate with your AdSense account; if you do not have an AdSense account yet then is best to create your blog first, post some things, I would say at least around 20 quality posts, and only then* apply for adsense. Then they will automatically integrate the ads in blogspot blog just by providing and confirming your adsense email/account; otherwise with different blog systems you would need a php script like wordpress and you need to edit html code to insert the ads, for start I recommend blogger.com.
You can have more blogs about different topics, actually I recommend this, because most people that earn from AdSense have multiple sites.
The blog topic must be something you know about, something you like writing about so you are able to provide more details. Some topics pay more than others per click but overall you end up with better income if you handle your content properly and write good quality content instead of picking a topic that pays much per click but not be able to write much about it.
You can have a personal blog with different topics but in my opinion it ranks better in Google if it is more about a specific topic (cars, money, electronics, reviews, shopping, pets, etc).
If you are a beginner, let me know if you need help, tell me what you want to blog about, I can help you pick a blog name, topic, etc. and mostly with answering questions if you have any. And I can help you setting your domain name (to replace the long blogspot.com address) when/if that will be needed.
